A construction company’s vehicle malfunction has led to the release of poisonous fluid in a condo in Spokane Valley. Residents are understandably concerned about the health impact of this event.
Last week, residents of a condominium in Spokane Valley felt shocked when a vehicle malfunction of a construction company resulted in hydraulic fluid raining down on their properties. A witness saw the event unfold, describing the poisonous fluid shooting up into the air before descending on several condo units, including backyards and gardens.
Deborah Longo, who was not home when it happened, feels downcast at the thought of her plants dying as well as the health effects of the fluid.
“I am so bummed about the plants, I can’t believe we’re going to go a whole summer without fresh vegetables, no peppers no tomatoes,” Longo said. “Everything is going to die.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hydraulic fluid is poisonous to humans and animals alike. It is a refined oil product that can kill nearly all the vegetation it touches. As such, Longo is right to feel worried.
Residents of the affected units must remain indoors as much as possible for the time being. This will prevent them — and their pets — from inhaling the toxic fumes of the hydraulic fluid.
Whitewater Creek Inc. is the construction company responsible. According to a company employee, the seal of one of their vehicles broke, resulting in a spill.
A state-contracted cleanup company is in charge of power washing the siding of the condos to get rid of the poisonous fluid. However, Longo’s lawn requires a total uprooting, which another company handles.
“I can honestly say we are stunned, all of us here are stunned,” Longo said.
Longo explained that the construction company’s owner has not provided any help nor shown any remorse. No information is available yet regarding any compensation.
