Mailbox thefts in Cinco Ranch have recently been on the rise, causing residents to feel unsafe.
Mailbox thefts are surging in Fort Bend County, with one community reporting a recent incident on an early Friday morning. That community is Canyon Gate at Cinco Ranch subdivision.
Residents felt frustrated as thieves broke into a cluster mailbox in their gated community, making off with numerous pieces of mail. Homeowners face additional frustration due to the federal nature of the crime.
A victim of the latest theft reveals that her home surveillance camera captured the incident around 5:30 a.m. on Friday. The community is perplexed about the how and who, considering there’s only one entrance and exit in the guarded and gated community.
Around 5:30 a.m., the unidentified woman received a Ring notification. The notification showed footage of a figure opening all doors and collecting mail in a bag at the mailboxes. A vehicle later arrives, and the woman loads everything into the trunk before driving off.
Despite the blurry video, the homeowner confirmed her suspicions when she found all mailboxes open and mail scattered along the street. Her expected debit card is among the stolen items. Homeowners Association President Hugh Durlam notes that mailbox thefts in Cinco Ranch are increasingly common. It is one of the subjects often discussed in their Facebook group.
Durlam suggests a possible method. He posits that thieves steal mail carriers’ arrow keys and wait for an opportune time to open and raid mailboxes. He plans to review more surveillance footage and urges anyone with information to contact authorities.
Fort Bend County Precinct 1 Constable Chad Norvell acknowledges the severity of the issue county-wide. They receive daily reports of mailbox thefts. He has contacted Congressman Troy Nells, who is pressuring the postal service for a solution. One solution potentially involves digital locks.
