The Florida State Legislature is considering offering a hurricane hardening program. If passed, the program is set to provide assistance to many condo associations in the state.
Making headway in the state Senate, a bill is paving the way for the continuation of a successful grant program aimed at fortifying Florida homes against hurricanes. Lawmakers also consider extending these benefits to condo owners, drawing inspiration from the My Safe Florida Home (MSFH) initiative launched in 2022.
The MSFH program, having faced a fund shortage, recently gained unanimous approval from the upper chamber’s Fiscal Policy Committee, setting the stage for further consideration in the full Senate.
The My Safe Florida Home program, deemed explosively successful, aims to strengthen homes. It provides eligible homeowners with grants of up to $10,000. Homeowners can use funds to install impact-resistant windows, potentially reducing insurance costs.
Republican Sen. Jim Boyd of Bradenton, a supporter of the program, noted its positive impact in reducing individual insurance policy premiums by an average of $800-$900.
Sen. Boyd’s proposed bill looks to inject over $100 million into the program for the upcoming fiscal year. Notably, the bill introduces new rules. It would prioritize low-income and senior homeowners aged 60 and above, a departure from previous practices.
In addition to these developments, lawmakers are actively exploring new avenues. One noteworthy initiative is the concept of the My Safe Florida Condo program, a pilot program inspired by the success of its home-focused counterpart.
Democrat Rep. Christine Hunschofsky of Coconut Creek spearheads this proposal. She anticipates an initial allocation of $25 million. Much like its predecessor, the program aims to target low-income elderly populations within condo associations.
While the bill for Florida homes and condos progresses, its fruition hinges on the larger budget. Supporters feel optimistic about the bill. Gov. Ron DeSantis, a staunch advocate of the MSFH program, desires its permanence. He envisions it as a crucial fixture in the Sunshine State’s ongoing efforts to enhance resilience against hurricane threats.
The proposed legislation signifies a proactive step toward safeguarding communities and fostering resilience. This reflects the commitment of Florida lawmakers to the well-being of their constituents.
