A neighbor of ours has been reporting minor rule violations to the board for 3 weeks straight now. He’s been giving 5-8 reports every week and it’s frustrating because they are only MINOR violations (missed mowing the lawn for one week or taking out the trash a few hours too early). This neighbor seems to think that he’s doing good but it’s just another form of harassment. What would you advise a homeowner or the board do about this?

Sounds to me like your neighbor is doing nothing wrong.

He’s literally harassing us every week with their reports. They are not even important rule violations. No one made any significant architectural changes or is using their house as a place of business. It’s crazy!

The bottom line is plain and simple – are they rule violations or not? Because if they are, then you’re in the wrong here. Your neighbor is just pointing out the rule violations in the community. Sounds like your board should thank him for doing their job.

this is the thing about home owner’s associations. no one ever wants to follow the rules but they want to reap all the benefits. it’s a two-way street buddy. if you broke the rules you gotta face the music.

But don’t you agree that it’s borderline harassment when your neighbor knocks on your door every day and tells you to mow your lawn because you’re breaking a rule?

No, it sounds like he’s helping you avoid a violation. Just suck it up and mow your lawn.

I had a neighbor do this to a few people in our condo too. It was annoying AF. We tried to sue but our neighbor answered by suing the board for not upholding their fiduciary duties. It frustrated us definitely but looking back he had a point and had a pretty solid case. Needless to say we ended up settling out of court.

I don’t think it’s gone to that extent yet but we just want him to stop.

have you tried just asking him to stop? because it seems like your main problem is the “harassment” and constantly knocking on your door everyday. if he stops doing that but still reports your violations to the board will you be satisfied?

I just want EVERYTHING to stop. All of it. No doorbells and no violations. They’re not even that serious.

They’re serious enough to be rules in your community so just accept that you made a mistake and try not to do it again.

if you and the board don’t like the rules change them. it’s that simple.
