Upgrading Condo Unit Aluminum Wires in Connecticut

Question:

How would a condo community handle replacing aluminum wire in each unit for safe, updated wiring. Coupling wire?

Answer:

Hi Miriam,

If the condo was formed after January 1, 1984, kindly refer to the Connecticut Common Interest Ownership Act Section 47-249(a) which states that the association is responsible for the common elements while the unit owners are responsible for their units. Who is responsible for the aluminum wires will depend on whether or not they’re part of individual units or the common areas.

If they are part of the individual units, the association may have the unit owners upgrade them. Otherwise, the association must take care of hiring the right vendors and scheduling the replacement. For further guidance, kindly consult a lawyer.
