Question:
The association is demanding a key to my unit ‘for emergency purposes’. I refuse to give a key to my home to men I do not like nor do I trust to keep out when I am not there. I do not trust their characters, etc. I told them if there is an emergency and I am not there then break the door down. The board consists of 3 men. The agent is a shady real estate company. I am in my condo 95% of the time.
Is there a law that protects me from this demand to turn over the keys to my home to literal strangers and likely criminals? How many people will have access to my keys?

Answer:
Hi Cynthia,
It is common for an HOA to require owners to give the association a key to their homes. However, you should check your governing documents to make sure your HOA has this authority.
