Question:
Can an HOA install a camera on site to deter crime?
– Barbara
Answer:
Hi Barbara,
Homeowners associations can install security cameras to deter crime. However, HOAs should only install these cameras in common areas and never in places where people have a reasonable expectation of privacy. These include but are not limited to bathrooms, changing rooms, and private property. Additionally, the cameras should not be pointed at any place or area where people have a reasonable expectation of privacy.
