How to Lower HOA Fees in Texas

Question:

My Hoa is asking for 2800 a year for fees.
How can I get these fees lowered?

– Marsha

Answer:

Hi Marsha,

The short answer is, you can’t. HOA fees are specifically calculated to meet the anticipated expenses of the association, and that means the board can typically raise or lower the fees as needed. An HOA may be able to lower its fees through cost-cutting methods, and you will find this article particularly helpful in that regard. However, homeowners who are not board members generally can’t negotiate to lower their fees. If you are having trouble paying your fees, consider approaching your HOA board to set up a payment plan, but not all HOAs offer this.

That being said, some associations are limited by their governing documents. Check your CC&Rs and bylaws to see if they restrict the HOA from raising the fees by a certain percentage or dollar amount.
