Miami Condo Residents Complain About Noise From Jail Nearby

Residents of a condo in Miami are complaining about noise from jail inmates nearby.

The Federal Detention Center in downtown Miami houses more than a thousand inmates. Downtown 5th, a high-rise condo, towers over the detention, and residents say noise coming from the inmates is disturbing their quiet enjoyment.

Residents Upset Over Noise from Jail

Resident Ryan Rea says he can’t enjoy the pool area anymore, thanks to the disturbance. The only time he likes to use the pool is when it gets sun, which is also the time when the inmates are in their recreational space.

Rea took a video of the pool deck, which is located on the 15th floor of the high-rise. The video shows the inmates yelling and whistling at the women who were sunbathing in the area.

Previously a parking lot, Downtown 5th opened in 2021. The condo consists of two towers with over 1,000 units. Rea lives in a two-bedroom unit, which costs him $2,700 a month.

Detention Center Part of Tours

The Federal Detention Center, which sits across the street, is home to both male and female inmates. Rea and other residents knew that the detention center was there. In fact, property managers have said that the detention center is part of the tours.

Some residents have lodged complaints about the noise from jail inmates. However, it is generally not much of an issue.

The developer has yet to respond to the situation. That being said, the Federal Bureau of Prisons is looking into the matter after viewing the video that Rea recorded. The bureau is reportedly finding a solution that will satisfy all parties involved.

“While for safety and security reasons we do not discuss internal guidance or security practices, we can tell you the issue presented in the video is under investigation and we are actively pursuing a solution that both addresses the concern of the public and is in accordance with American Correctional Association guidelines,” a spokesperson for the bureau told Local 10 News.
