Delectable Thanksgiving Recipes for the Holiday

Thanksgiving is here! And for a lot of people, that means sitting down for a long dinner with friends and family. But, what should you serve this holiday? Here are the best Thanksgiving recipes to try.

 

1. Green Bean Casserole

Ingredients:

  • For the topping:
    • 2 onions, sliced thinly
    • 2 tbsp panko bread crumbs
    • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1 tsp Kosher salt
    • Cooking spray
  • For the green beans and sauce:
    • 1 lb fresh green beans, cleaned, trimmed, and cut into halves
    • 12 oz mushrooms, trimmed and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
    • 1 cup chicken broth
    • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 cup half-and-half
    • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
    • 2 tbsp Kosher salt
    • 1 tsp Kosher salt
    • 1/2 tsp black pepper, freshly ground
    • 1/4 tsp nutmeg, freshly ground

 

Directions for the topping:

  1. Preheat the oven the 475°F.
  2. In a bowl, combine onions, panko bread crumbs, flour, and salt. Transfer to a sheet pan coated with cooking spray.
  3. Bake the onion and panko mixture until golden brown, tossing 2 to 3 times throughout the baking process.
  4. Remove the cooked onion and panko mixture from the oven. Set aside.

 

Directions for the green bean and sauce:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  2. Boil a gallon of water with 2 tbsp of salt. Blanch the beans for 5 minutes. Drain the beans and immediately immerse in ice water to prevent them from cooking further. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a cast iron skillet, melt the butter and cook mushrooms, 1 tsp salt, and pepper on medium-high heat. Cook for about 4 to 5 minutes.
  4. Add garlic and nutmeg into the skillet. Cook for another 1 to 2 minutes.
  5. Add the flour over the cooked mixture and stir. Cook for 1 minute.
  6. Pour in the broth and simmer for 1 minute.
  7. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Add the half-and-half.
  8. Cook the mixture until it thickens, stirring to prevent clumps.
  9. Remove the sauce from the heat. Add the green beans and 1/4 of the onions. Combine.
  10. Top the beans with the remaining onions. Bake in the oven for about 15 minutes or until bubbly. Serve immediately.

 

2. Andouille Cornbread Dressing

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb andouille sausage or other smoked sausage, chopped
  • 6 1/2 cups crumbled cornbread
  • 5 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup onion, chopped
  • 1 cup green onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup celery, chopped
  • 1/2 cup green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 6 tbsp butter, melted
  • 3 tbsp garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Emeril’s Creole Seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper, freshly ground
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne

 

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F.
  2. Cook sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat for about 3 minutes.
  3. Add onion, celery, garlic, green onion, and bell pepper. Cook for another 5 minutes or until soft. Remove from heat.
  4. In a large bowl, mix together the sausage and vegetable mixture with chicken broth, crumbled cornbread, Creole seasoning, salt, pepper, and cayenne. Drizzle with butter and combine well.
  5. Oil an 8×8 square pan or 12-inch skillet with butter. You can also use a 1 1/2-quart casserole. Pour the sausage mixture in the pan or skillet.
  6. Bake for 50 minutes, stirring every 20 minutes to prevent sticking. Serve hot.

 

3. Classic Macaroni and Cheese

If you want a staple recipe for Thanksgiving, here’s a delicious good mac and cheese dish.

Ingredients:

  • For the béchamel:
    • 4 cups (1 quart) whole milk
    • 8 tbsp unsalted butter (1 stick)
    • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1 tbsp kosher salt, plus more to taste
  • To assemble:
    • Kosher salt
    • 1 pound elbow macaroni
    • 8 oz or 2 cups 2-year aged sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
    • 3 oz or 1 cup Pecorino Romano cheese, grated
    • 2/3 cup panko (optional)

 

Directions for the béchamel:

  1. In a medium saucepan, heat the milk over medium-high heat just until about to simmer. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. In a saucepan with a heavy bottom, melt the butter over medium heat. Add flour, whisking constantly until it turns light brown. Remove from heat.
  3. Pour in the hot milk slowly, whisking as you go to prevent clumps. Whisk until smooth.
  4. Return the saucepan to the stove and cook over medium-high heat. Whisk constantly while cooking until the sauce thickens. Season with salt. Remove from heat and set aside.

 

Directions to assemble:

  1. Boil a large pot of salted water. Cook the pasta in the boiling water until almost al dente. Drain pasta and rinse with cold water. Set aside.
  2. Place the béchamel sauce over medium heat and add both cheese. Combine until the cheese is melted and smooth. Add the pasta and stir to combine. Cook until the pasta is heated through.
  3. Transfer to a dish and serve immediately.

 

Optional directions for panko:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  2. Transfer mac and cheese to a baking dish and sprinkle the panko over the top.
  3. Bake in the oven until the panko browns.
  4. Serve immediately.

 

4. Parker House Rolls

Ingredients:

  • 6 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, cut into pieces, plus more for brushing
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 3 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt

 

Directions:

  1. Bring milk to a simmer in a small saucepan. Remove from heat. Add the butter and sugar. Stir until combined and set aside to cool.
  2. Dissolve yeast in warm water. Allow to sit until it foams.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the milk mixture, yeast, eggs, salt, and half of the flour. Use the dough attachment to mix until smooth. Add the remaining flour 1/2 cup at a time until a smooth dough ball forms.
  4. Remove the dough from the bowl. On a floured surface, knead the dough by hand for 5 minutes.
  5. Grease a new bowl and place the kneaded dough inside. Cover the bowl and place in a warm place. Let it rise until it doubles in size, about 60 minutes.
  6. Punch down the dough and place it on a floured surface. Shape into rolls or other desired shapes.
  7. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and transfer the shaped rolls. Cover the sheet and allow the dough to rise for another 30 to 40 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake the rolls until golden brown, about 20 minutes.
  9. Remove the rolls from the oven and brush melted butter over the top. Serve.

 

5. Mashed Potatoes

Thanksgiving Mashed Potatoes

Ingredients:

  • 5 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 2 cups Parmesan cheese
  • 1 1/2 cups cream cheese
  • 1 cup chopped fresh chives
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 garlic, peeled and minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste

 

Directions:

  1. Peel potatoes and cut them into quarters. Boil them in a large pot with salted water until tender.
  2. Drain the water and leave the potatoes in the pot. Place over heat for 1 to 2 minutes to let dry.
  3. Add both cheeses, butter, garlic, chives, salt, and pepper. Mash to combine until smooth.
  4. Transfer to a bowl and serve.

 

6. Candied Yams

Ingredients:

  • 1 (29 oz) can sweet potatoes
  • 1 1/2 cups mini marshmallows
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, cut into pieces

 

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  2. Drain the can of sweet potatoes and transfer to a baking dish. Place butter pieces all over, distributing evenly. Sprinkle the top with brown sugar and a layer of mini marshmallows.
  3. Bake for 25 minutes until the marshmallows have melted and the sweet potatoes are tender.
  4. Serve immediately.

 

7. Juicy Thanksgiving Turkey Recipe

Thanksgiving Turkey

Ingredients:

  • 1 (15 lb) whole turkey, neck and giblets removed
  • 1 (14.5 oz) can chicken broth
  • 2 tbsp dried parsley
  • 2 tbsp ground dried rosemary
  • 1 tbsp lemon-pepper seasoning
  • 2 tbsp rubbed dried sage
  • 1 bottle champagne
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 2 celery stalks, cut into slices
  • 1 orange, cut into wedges
  • 2 tbsp dried thyme leaves
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 carrot, cut into slices

 

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a roasting pan with aluminum foil that are long enough to wrap over and around the turkey.
  2. In a bowl, combine parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, salt, and lemon-pepper seasoning.
  3. Rub the herb mixture into the cavity of the turkey. Stuff the cavity with orange wedges, celery, carrot, and onion. Tie the turkey legs together with kitchen string. Tuck the wings underneath the body of the turkey.
  4. Place the turkey on the foil-lined roaster. Pour chicken broth and champagne over the turkey and inside the cavity. Wrap the turkey with excess foil to seal without letting the foil touch the turkey.
  5. Roast turkey in the oven for 2 1/2 to 3 hours or until juices run clear.
  6. Unwrap the turkey and bake for another 30 to 60 minutes or until golden brown.
  7. Once the inside of the turkey reads 180°F, remove it from the oven.
  8. Cover again with aluminum foil and let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.

 

8. Simple Turkey Gravy

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups turkey stock
  • 1 cup liquid from turkey drippings
  • 1/2 cup fat from turkey drippings
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste

 

Directions:

  1. Melt the fat from the turkey drippings over medium-low heat. Pour in flour and whisk until golden brown.
  2. Pour in liquid from turkey drippings and turkey stock. Whisk constantly over medium heat until the smooth.
  3. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

 

9. Cranberry Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups (one 12-ounce package) fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water

 

Directions:

  1. Rinse cranberries and remove any bruised or damaged ones.
  2. Combine water and sugar in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar well.
  3. Add cranberries into the sugar mixture and cook until they burst. Lower the heat and let it simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. You can serve the cranberry sauce as is or you can add other ingredients at this point. Adjust to taste.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow to cool to room temperature.
  6. Transfer to a bowl and chill in the fridge before serving.
